Matching Doors with Flooring

Here’s the thing, you want your home to exude charm and style, but the little things get in the way. Not all the time, but every now and again you’ll find you get stuck when it comes to something like the interior doors and matching them to the flooring. We’re going to discuss this now, and hopefully we’ll help you get over that hurdle if you’re planning on changing the doors or flooring, or both.

First let’s start with materials.

Laminates or individual grains are great and it’s a matter of personal taste which one you decide to go with. Having both won’t necessarily match well though, so always consider how these two different finishes are going to work together before you invest. It might be best if you stick to one or the other depending on the finished result you’re going for.

What type of doors are you going with?

Are you into natural wood? If so, you may be thinking about how you’re going to match the flooring. You could choose a variety of finishes to help match the grain in the wood. Laminate or tiles with similar shades would go well, in sand or caramel. Oak is a beautiful wood, and if you choose it there’s little to stop you using whatever you like for your flooring as it doesn’t have quite the same limitations as other timbers.

If you have a hardwood floor this will have a certain influence on the décor of your room. You could work on the stain for the door frames and trim – you want them both to match and work together. It doesn’t have to be identical but should be complimentary. Remember that stains can produce different colours on different woods.

If you have a unique personality, then perhaps you want the décor of your home to match it. You can have brightly coloured interior doors and choose flooring that will work with the colour. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same – no pink floors! Unless of course you really want to….

If you have bright doors, then you could match it with light and space with maples and pine in lighter shades of off white and beige. Grey is perfect if you have bright colours with warm tones. If you have bright doors, then a grey floor will look superb, and if your furniture is traditional the grey could give it a more modern look.
